How did AP CSA change in 2025-26?
Starting in the 2025-26 school year, the College Board completely overhauled the AP CSA (AP Computer Science A) curriculum. Previously in the exam scope, Inheritance and Polymorphism were removed from the required content, and File I/O and Dataset Processing were newly added. In addition, from the May 2026 exam onward, the format shifts from a paper exam → a fully digital Bluebook exam. If you're using old textbooks or prep materials based on the old curriculum, you need to update right now.

Starting in the 2025-26 school year, the College Board revised the AP Computer Science A (CSA) curriculum framework. Inheritance and Polymorphism were removed from the required scope, and File I/O and Dataset Processing were designated as new required scope. The May exam is administered only in the Bluebook digital format. In Korea, too, you can take it at Fulbright Korea-certified AP test centers (KIS, SIS, YISS, SFS, etc.).
| Item | Old curriculum (through 2024) | New curriculum (2025-26 onward) |
|---|---|---|
| Inheritance · Polymorphism Inheritance / Polymorphism |
Included in required exam scope | remove Removed from required scope |
| File I/O · Dataset Processing File I/O / Dataset Processing |
Not included | New Added to required scope |
| Exam format | Paper exam | Changed Fully digital Bluebook |
| Core OOP concepts | Classes, objects, inheritance, polymorphism, interfaces | Class- and object-centered — reduced emphasis on inheritance/polymorphism |
| Data handling | Arrays, ArrayList | Arrays, ArrayList + File I/O, datasets |
| Taking the exam in Korea | Fulbright Korea-certified centers (paper) | Fulbright Korea-certified centers (Bluebook) |
Correct. With the College Board's 2025-26 overhaul, Inheritanceand Polymorphismwere removed from the AP CSA required exam scope. The reason this change matters is clear.
CIT updated its curriculum immediately at the end of 2025, and newly enrolled students learn based on the 2025-26 framework from the start.
From May 2026, the AP CSA exam is administered fully digitally through the College Board Bluebook app. The FRQ (free-response code-writing) answers you used to write on paper must now be typed directly on screen. We've laid out the prep steps in numbered order.
In Korea, the AP exam can be taken at AP test centers certified by Fulbright Korea. The May 2026 exam is likewise administered in the Bluebook digital format at certified centers in Korea.
If your current school doesn't operate an AP test center or you want to test outside your school, check the certified centers on the Fulbright Korea website. Registration deadlines are usually in February–March, so it's best to hurry.
AP CSA (Computer Science A) and AP CSP (Computer Science Principles) are both AP CS courses administered by the College Board, but they differ greatly in content and difficulty. It's important to choose the right course based on your child's current level and goals.
| Distinction | AP CSA | AP CSP |
|---|---|---|
| Programming language | Java | No language restriction (mainly Python, JavaScript) |
| Exam format | 40 multiple-choice + 4 free-response (code-writing) questions 2026 digital | 70 multiple-choice questions + Create Performance Task |
| Difficulty | High (college CS1 level) | Medium (intro CS level) |
| Recommended for | Students with prior programming experience or those aiming for a CS major | CS beginners and students who want to learn a broad range of CS concepts |
| College admissions value | Strongly recommended when applying for a CS/Engineering major | Demonstrates interest in CS and is helpful even when applying for other majors |

AP CSA: Java syntax, classes & objects, data structures, algorithms, recursion, File I/O, dataset processing covered according to the latest College Board framework. AP CSP: includes computational thinking, data, the Internet, algorithms, and programming fundamentals.
Students repeatedly take practice tests that mirror the Bluebook digital exam environment on CIT's in-house ExamPrep platform. An adaptive system automatically analyzes weak units to support efficient studying.
In small 1:4 classes, we intensively reinforce each student's weak units. We provide personalized instruction covering FRQ coding practice, analysis of frequently tested patterns, and time-management strategies.
CIT is an in-person academy in Apgujeong, Seoul, but for students who need a final push right before the AP CSA exam, we offer 6-8 weeks of 1:1 online intensive coaching right before the May digital exam. It runs with the same curriculum and instructors regardless of location.
Online intensive coaching runs separately from the in-person Apgujeong classes, and a hybrid format (in-person classes + online reinforcement) is also available. Spots are limited, so we recommend reaching out at least two months before the exam.
AP Computer Science plays a real role in U.S. college admissions. For students applying to CS/Engineering majors, a 5 on AP CSA is a key indicator of academic ability, and even when applying to other majors it serves as strong evidence of a willingness to challenge oneself.
Taking AP courses adds points to your Weighted GPA, and high AP scores can earn college credit, providing a tangible benefit. At CIT, we connect AP exam prep with the USACO competition, AI projects, and more, designing a comprehensive roadmap so you can demonstrate consistent CS ability throughout the admissions process.

Starting in the 2025-26 school year, the College Board overhauled the AP CSA curriculum. There are three key changes. First, Inheritance and Polymorphism have been removed from the required exam scope. Second, File I/O and Dataset Processing have been added as new required topics. Third, starting with the May 2026 exam, it fully transitions from a paper exam to the Bluebook digital exam.
Correct. With the 2025-26 overhaul, Inheritance and Polymorphism have been removed from the required exam scope. If you're using old textbooks or old curriculum-based online lectures, you need to update right now. Conversely, focusing on the newly added File I/O and dataset processing is the key to preparing for the 2026 exam.
The May 2026 AP CSA exam is fully digital, delivered through the College Board Bluebook app. Prep order: 1) install the Bluebook app and practice writing Java code on screen, 2) focus on the new framework (File I/O, datasets), 3) repeatedly take practice tests in the digital environment, 4) train your FRQ typing speed. The CIT ExamPrep platform provides practice tests that mirror the digital exam environment.
In Korea, you can take the AP exam at AP test centers authorized by Fulbright Korea (the Korean-American Educational Commission). Major international schools such as KIS (Korea International School), SIS (Seoul International School), YISS (Yongsan International School of Seoul), and SFS (Seoul Foreign School) operate as test centers. You can register for the exam through your school, and you may also use a test center other than the one you attend. Registration typically closes in February-March, so act early.
AP CSA focuses on Java programming and algorithms, while AP CSP focuses on broad computer science concepts and a creative project (the Create Task). CSA requires deeper coding ability, while CSP is accessible even to students with little programming experience. CSA is more advantageous when applying for a CS/Engineering major.
Prior Java experience helps, but it isn't required. CIT's AP CSA course starts from Java fundamentals and systematically covers everything in the exam scope. That said, we recommend securing enough prep time (six months or more).
It depends on your programming experience, but it usually takes 6-12 months of systematic preparation. At CIT, we build a study plan tailored to each student's level and aim to efficiently achieve a 5 through realistic practice tests and weakness analysis.
Ideally, start at least six months before the exam (in May), around September-October of the previous year. If you have no Java background, we recommend starting a full year ahead. An intensive course over summer break is also effective, and you can prepare for the 6-8 weeks right before the May exam with CIT's 1:1 online intensive coaching.
The AP exam score itself isn't directly factored into your GPA, but taking an AP course in itself adds points to your Weighted GPA. In addition, a high AP exam score becomes strong evidence of academic ability in college admissions.
Yes. CIT runs 6-8 weeks of 1:1 online intensive coaching right before the May exam. Students outside central Seoul (Bundang, Ilsan, Incheon, etc.) and Korean students living in Singapore, Hong Kong, or the U.S. East Coast all study with the same curriculum regardless of location.
