2027 OFFICIAL MATERIALS · ROUTE-FIRST ORIENTATION

Do Korean universities require ECs for IB and international-school students?

EC is not a universal eligibility requirement. It can add evidence where the selected route evaluates such material and the activity is relevant, verifiable, student-owned and submitted in an allowed format.

The short answer

No rule requires a particular number of ECs across all Korean universities. Where a route permits activity evidence, it may provide context for subject interest, initiative, community contribution and academic depth. Applicants should identify the route before building or reporting an activity.

ROUTE-FIRST ORIENTATION

Which route should an applicant investigate first?

1

Student and parents may meet foreign-national requirements

Check each university’s nationality, family relationship, date-of-acquisition and schooling rules.

2

Entire elementary–secondary curriculum completed abroad

Check the institutions, semesters, graduation and evidence the university recognizes.

3

A possible overseas-Korean route

Check student and parent schooling, employment and residence conditions, plus the activity form for that year.

4

Korean citizen at an international school in Korea

Do not assume an overseas-school route; review domestic pathways and restrictions for the school type.

Important: This is an orientation tool, not an official eligibility determination. Do not send nationality, family or immigration documents through a marketing form; confirm eligibility directly with each admissions office.

What official 2027 materials demonstrate

These are examples from different routes. They must not be generalized to another route or year. Always read the source and any later correction notice.

Examples of activity evidence in official 2027 admissions materials
University and route exampleWhat the official material saysCIT interpretation rule
Seoul National University
2027 international undergraduate admission
Applicants may list up to ten optional high-school activities or awards. One continuous activity is treated as one entry. Academic and non-academic evidence is reviewed comprehensively.Relevant, verifiable activity can add context, but it remains one part of a broader academic review.
Yonsei University
Cited 2027 overseas-Korean activity form
The school extracurricular section permits up to six high-school-organized activities; volunteer service has a separate section of up to six entries. The form requires school verification and excludes awards.School-based activity architecture and verifiability can matter more than collecting outside certificates.
Korea University
Cited 2027 overseas-Korean guide
The cited guide permits up to five school-issued activity entries with evidence. IB, AP and other standardized academic results appear as a separate evidence category.Do not call an IB/AP score an EC; use student-owned projects as separate evidence of fit and contribution where permitted.

What may not count, depending on the route

Outside competition records or awards
Activities not organized, issued or verified by the school
Awards or separate evidence excluded from a particular form
Activities before high school or after graduation
Predicted and final scores reported without distinction
One continuous activity artificially divided into several entries
Publications, patents, outside awards or private certificates restricted in some domestic contexts
Work the student cannot perform, explain or source

This is not a universal prohibition list. Each statement must be read as “may be restricted for this route and admissions year.”

Map the evidence before building the EC

  1. 1. Academic evidence: transcript, rigor, IB/AP results
  2. 2. Activity evidence: school role, dates and the student’s exact contribution
  3. 3. Work evidence: log, code, data provenance, report, poster or demo
  4. 4. Outcome evidence: users, presentations, service results or official competition record
  5. 5. Route compatibility: what the applicable form allows

The CIT position

Korean universities do not universally require a fixed number of ECs. Activities may strengthen an application where the route permits them, but academic readiness comes first. One or two deep, student-owned and verifiable extensions are easier to defend than a collection of unrelated certificates.

Frequently asked questions

Are ECs required for Korean university admission?

There is no universal EC requirement or fixed activity count across all Korean universities and routes. Activities can add context where a route permits them, but submission formats and evaluation vary by university, admissions year and route.

Can this guide determine which Korean admissions route applies?

No. This guide helps applicants distinguish foreign-national, full-overseas-curriculum, overseas-Korean and domestic possibilities. Confirm official eligibility involving nationality, family relationship, schooling and residence directly with each university.

Can every outside competition award be submitted?

No. Some routes accept only high-school activities organized or verified by the school, and a particular activity form may exclude outside awards or additional evidence. Check the official form for the applicable admissions year.

Is an IB or AP score an EC?

No. IB and AP results are standardized academic evidence and should remain distinct from activity evidence. Whether and how scores can be submitted also varies by university and route.

Why does school verification matter?

Some routes require activities to have taken place during high school and to be organized, issued or verified by the school. Before starting a project, confirm what a teacher or counselor can truthfully verify.

Can a KSEF project be valuable without an award?

Yes. Student-owned work can deepen subject knowledge and produce code, research, presentation practice and school-verifiable process evidence. It should be submitted for admission only where the chosen route permits it.
