Low mental load, one clear first action, and control without pressure

The course was designed from open research published by Stanford and MIT. Students learn how university researchers turn a question about easy, safe technology into a fair comparison. They preserve the question, two designs, task results, revision, and limits so their own thinking is visible in a later college application.

01 / User and context

A Nova student who sees too many choices before opening homework

Remembering the task, opening the portal, choosing a priority, starting, and managing alerts

Thinking experienceAction experienceEmotional experienceTime and contextSocial experience
02 / Problem

Too much information appears before the first action, so the starting path gets lost.

Target experienceLow mental load, one clear first action, and control without pressure

03 / Testable requirements

Turn a need into a clear system promise

  • Make one next action clear on the first screen.
  • Let the user change support and alert settings.
  • Keep the user's choices after an error, cancel, or restart.
04 / Alternatives

One variable, two versions

  • A: a guided start that reveals one step at a time
  • B: a three-task board the user can reorder
05 / Practical test

Check it with the same real task

Run a crossed A/B task. Compare time, errors, backtracking, workload rating, and preference.

06 / Evidence

Use numbers and user comments

  • Time to start the first task
  • Errors and backtracking
  • Short workload rating and open comments

07 / Redesign

Use the evidence to improve once

Improve the flow supported by both actions and ratings. Keep any opposing response as a stated limit.

08 / Ethics and accessibility

A good score is not the whole experience

No false urgency, shame, streaks, or hidden defaults. The user controls alerts, support, and stopping.

09 / Student output

Anonymous research, journey map, Figma or web A/B, usability data, and UX case study

Limit: A small class pilot is early evidence. Record how people and contexts differ, then name the next question to test.
